Roundtable dedicated to the International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples Held in Kyiv

On August 9, Estonian Institute of Human Rights was represented in a roundtable discussion held in Kyiv: „The Realization of the rights of indigenous peoples in Ukraine and in the world: problems and perspectives“ which focused on the rights of Crimean Tatars – indigenous people of Ukraine. Ukrainian and International experts who participated in the discussion (including member of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Mr. Ilmi Umerov, Head of Crimean Tatar Resource Centre Mr. Eskender Bariiev and International law expert Mr. Boris Babin agreed that Ukraine has several opportunities to strengthen its legislation and policies concerning indigenous peoples, and to activate its International advocacy in support of the human rights of its indigenous peoples, in particular Crimean Tatars. Estonian Institute of Human Rights was represented at the roundtable discussion by Oliver Loode who emphasized the importance of implementing the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Ukraine, including by adopting legislation related to Ukraine’s indigenous peoples.
